Two Moons (ft. Key)

Now let me tell you something. There will be many a time as we continue to go through EXO’s discography that I will point out songs that make me want to dance. Two Moons is another song.

Two Moons…kind of an ominous title, don’t you think?

It suggests that we are about to enter another dimension. It’s main theme is perhaps transformation.

Looking at the lyrics side by side, there is obviously an anticipation of something to come. But what is the significance of Two Moons…? Going back again to the importance of the Moon in Chinese culture…within the same robes of the Emperor of the Qing Dynasty you can find the second symbol of Sovereignty, the Moon. The Moon represents all that is heaven, and the Jade Rabbit or the Moon Goddess Chang’e (嫦娥; pinyin: Cháng’é) enclosed within it who creates (pounds) the elixir of eternity.

Fitting then is the mention of the wolf, an animal often associated with the Moon. It also seems to suggest a dual personality. That the light of night brings out something in EXO that the light of the morning does not.

[Chanyeol]
seodulleo seodulleo oneulman yeollineun
Hurry up, hurry up, open the parallel path

pyeonghaengtongro netdimensyeoneuro
With the 4 dimension only today

saeroun nae sesang eoje mannan
In the new world, I will not be the me

naega anilgeoya geotbogiron
you met yesterday

ama ddokgata boigetjiman
I might look the same

geureon ppeonhan geotdeul gidaehaji ma
Don’t anticipate these obvious things

2 nah
imi il deohagi il dabeun jeoldaero 2 nah
If it’s already 1 plus 1 it can never be 2 nah

Welcome to the night

[Tao]
Get it up get it up
Get it up get it up yǐjīng zhǔnbèi jiùxù jiùshì xiànzài hold wǒ de shǒu
Get it up get it up I’m ready to go, right now hold my hand

Nàxiē bùtóng de bùtóng de rén
So many of the others

Yīzhí xiǎngfāngshèfǎ fēng wǒ de kǒu
are already trying to silence me

Zhǐshì mùqián hái méi xíguàn
Still not used to it

Bù zài gěi nǐ biāozhǔn dì dá’àn
me not giving straight answers

4 dimension
4 dimension shuàixiān zài zhèlǐ děngdài welcome to the night
Four dimensions I wait here first, welcome to the night

[Kris]
That’s right

The conversation within this song seems to be happening amongst the members of EXO and some bystander. That either you welcome the night, you welcome the change or you get out of the way. They have been awaiting this energy shift that may somehow help them here on Earth.

But there are some interesting phrases here…

geureon ppeonhan geotdeul gidaehaji ma
Don’t anticipate these obvious things

2 nah
imi il deohagi il dabeun jeoldaero 2 nah
If it’s already 1 plus 1 it can never be 2 nah

and

Bù zài gěi nǐ biāozhǔn dì dá’àn
me not giving straight answers

4 dimension
4 dimension shuàixiān zài zhèlǐ děngdài welcome to the night
Four dimensions I wait here first, welcome to the night

Chanyeol is saying to not anticipate obvious things but isn’t it obvious that the sum of 1+1 is indeed the number 2? Apparently not.

Tao’s mention of being present in the 4th dimension while still not giving straight answers…obviously they are trying to say with so many metaphors that things are not as they seem. It’s not as clear as we would like to think. They are speaking to us from a different plane..or is this just going on and on and making something of nothing?

Something to appreciate is the addition of Key of Shinee. (Woo hoo!)

[Key]
Hey y’all, we’re runnin’ out of time
Selected VIP wouldn’t it be mind-blowingly awesome
Now we on a rock rock rocket, just gotta keep your seat belt fastened

[Key]
No you’re not gonna shoulda woulda this and coulda woulda that
Cause you’re never comin’ back to this trap
See the two full moons you’re the chosen knight
Go and spread good news cause you got no time

The use of a completely English verse here by Key is interesting as well. What was the meaning behind that? What was accomplished by using only English here that could not have been done using either Korean or Chinese? Hm.

And what he is saying in English…who is the chosen Knight? Is he warning EXO? Is he telling them to buckle up and let’s go because now that they’re here there is no backing out? Or is the warning for the people of Earth?

Also I’d like to know if there is any relationship of Two Moons to Full Moon, a song that pops up later in the discography. (Another I-just-need-a-moment-to-dance-song.)
